WE ARE THE REAL CHANGEMAKERS

The Butterfly Mark is not just a symbol; it represents the real changemakers in the luxury industry. It is an esteemed recognition awarded by Positive Luxury to brands that consistently meet and exceed higher standards for both people and nature. At KŌRARU, we are proud to have earned this prestigious certification with a score of 63/100 (26% above the certification standard).

To attain the Butterfly Mark, we underwent an expert-led assessment that covers all areas of sustainability. This comprehensive evaluation is built upon international agreements, global frameworks, and standards, as well as potential upcoming legislation. It examines our impact on climate, nature, and water, how we treat our workers and communities, and the responsible and ethical practices that govern our business operations.

We take great pride in achieving our Butterfly Mark certification, but our commitment to sustainability does not stop there. We are dedicated to continually improving our performance. Every two years, we voluntarily undergo re-certification to an even higher standard than before, ensuring that we are constantly pushing ourselves to do better.

By choosing the Butterfly Mark, you are not only supporting a brand that prioritizes sustainability but also becoming part of a global movement that is transforming luxury for the greater good. The Butterfly represents real change in luxury, signifying a commitment to positive impact across all aspects of our business.

To earn the Butterfly Mark, we had to provide evidence of the changes we are making in various sustainability issues. From our environmental impact on climate, nature, and water to how we prioritize the well-being of our workers and communities, as well as our responsible and ethical business practices - no detail was left out.

Passing the assessment required us to score a minimum of 50% in each of the three areas: Environment, Social, and Governance. This rigorous process ensures that Butterfly Mark certification is not easily obtained. However, we remain dedicated to continuous improvement and strive for excellence in all aspects of sustainability.

At KŌRARU, we invite you to show the world what real change looks like. By choosing the Butterfly Mark, you become part of a global movement that is transforming the luxury industry for the betterment of all.

Together, let's embrace sustainability and make a positive impact on the world!

  • WHAT TO IMPROVE

ENVIRONMENT:

KŌRARU has made significant strides in environmental management by developing a formal Environmental Management System (EMS). This system acts as a guiding framework, promoting environmental responsibility, compliance with legal requirements, and continuous reporting and communication of performance. The EMS includes clear objectives and targets for waste reduction and greenhouse gas emissions. KŌRARU aims to achieve a 25% reduction in overall waste directed to landfill and a 15% reduction in overall greenhouse gas emissions by the end of 2024.

SOCIAL:

KŌRARU has embedded a strong social responsibility culture into its business model. To identify and manage material social issues, the brand conducted a formal materiality assessment, recognizing the significant impacts actions can have on the environment and people. Additionally, KŌRARU empowers its employees to drive impactful change within the organization through decision-making processes and education, including Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion training.

GOVERNANCE:

Throughout the certification process, KŌRARU demonstrated alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By conducting an alignment analysis, KŌRARU identified the most relevant SDGs to their business operations. This analysis considered the importance of each SDG to the business, current practices supporting these goals, potential risks of not achieving them, and formal targets to contribute to the Global Goals by 2030. KŌRARU aims to make a positive impact on five different SDGs, such as SDG 14: Conserve and Sustainably Use Oceans, Seas, and Marine Resources. The brand achieves this by sourcing fabrics made from nylon waste like fishing nets and donating part of its sales to coral conservation through the Coral Alliance.

ENVIRONMENT:

While KŌRARU has made commendable progress in environmental management, there are still areas where further improvements can be made. By focusing on innovative solutions and exploring additional strategies, KŌRARU can continue to reduce its environmental footprint even more effectively.

SOCIAL:

While KŌRARU has taken important steps towards social responsibility, there is always room for growth. By continuously evaluating and addressing material social issues, KŌRARU can further enhance its positive impact on society.

GOVERNANCE:

While KŌRARU has shown leadership in aligning with the SDGs, ongoing efforts are necessary to fully realize their potential impact. By continuously reviewing and updating strategies aligned with the relevant SDGs, KŌRARU can further contribute to creating a sustainable future.

By acknowledging both our areas of leadership and areas for improvement, we remain dedicated to our commitment to transparency and continuous progress. We strive to be at the forefront of sustainability in the luxury industry and invite our community to join us on this journey towards a better future.
