BORN IN JAPAN

BORN IN TOKYO, KŌRARU IS INSPIRED BY THE ESSENCE OF JAPANESE LIFESTYLE, AND HONOURS THE PRINCIPLES OF MINIMALISM, INTEGRITY AND A DEEP-ROOTED RESPECT FOR THE NATURAL WORLD AND THE COMMUNITY AROUND US.

We are circular by nature, taking a holistic and mindful approach to every aspect of what we do, and are committed to creating beautifully made swimwear from regenerated materials that will last a lifetime.

Kōraru is an invitation to slow down and take a moment to reconnect. Founded in 2020, it comes from a desire to step back from the wasteful and environmentally damaging practises that founder Oana Romaneiro observed during her 15-years experience working in the fashion industry. Recognising the necessity for a shift in pace, Oana felt compelled to harness the circular values of Japan - where she has been traveling to since 2010 and now lives with her family - and establish a brand where contemporary design and a sustainable mindset work in harmony. Every element of Kōraru is done with intent and attention, considering how our swimwear affects the earth and the people who make and wear it.

Kōraru – a Japanese take on the word “coral” – speaks to our utmost regard for nature, as well as Oana’s life-long affinity to the ocean, cultivated from her childhood growing up along the Black Sea coast. We believe it is a privilege to enjoy beautiful things, and that true luxury is owning a garment that has been crafted in a considered and compassionate way. We are proud to make our swimwear from ECONYL, a truly circular regenerated nylon made from waste fishing nets. Our swimsuits are made in partnership with our manufacturer in Columbia who shares our value system, using environmentally protective manufacturing processes, providing employment for local women and supporting community charities.

Integral to our ethos is long-lasting design. Clean lines, minimal silhouettes and considered colour palette, create modern yet timeless pieces that transcend trend and seasonality. A focus on impeccable fit and comfort ensures our swimwear is flattering and effortless to wear for years to come. Committed to encouraging responsible consumption, we have taken respite from the traditional fashion calendar, offering a core collection of enduring styles, and adding thoughtful newness only when appropriate.

Our packaging is constructed entirely using materials selected for their innovative approaches to sustainability. The origami-inspired carrier that holds each swimsuit is made from Paptic Tringa, a new form of cellulose paper made from sustainable wood pulp. Our cotton tote bags are made from 100% Oeko-tex certified, renewable and biodegradable cotton fibre. Shiro Alga Carta – an upcycled algae – creates the lining of our boxes which are intentionally minimal to ensure no environmental resources are wasted.

Circular in every sense, for every swimsuit purchased, we give back to the ocean by donating $5 to Coral Reef Alliance, a non-profit organisation working to conserve endangered coral reefs and marine ecosystems around the world.
